Solar Maintenance 101: Keeping Your System Performing for Years

A solar system is one of the lowest-maintenance investments you'll make in your property, but "low-maintenance" isn't the same as "no maintenance." Panels lose output to dust, batteries lose life to poor charging habits, and inverters develop faults that go unnoticed until output has already dropped for months. A simple routine, done consistently, keeps a system performing close to its rated output for its full lifespan.

Panels: dust is the quiet enemy of output

In much of Kenya, dust and dry-season buildup on panel surfaces can measurably reduce output within weeks, especially on low-pitched roofs or in areas near unpaved roads. Cleaning frequency depends on your location, but a rule of thumb is every three to six months, using water and a soft brush — never abrasive cleaners or high-pressure jets that can damage the glass seal or microcracks the panel underneath.

  • Clean panels in the early morning or evening, never in direct midday heat, to avoid thermal shock
  • Check for bird droppings, leaves or debris that shade individual cells and drag down a whole string's output
  • Inspect mounting bolts and roof flashing annually, especially before the long rains

Batteries: charging habits matter more than the chemistry

Whatever battery chemistry you have, the single biggest lifespan killer is repeated deep discharge below the manufacturer's recommended limit. A good hybrid inverter setup protects against this automatically, but it's worth checking your monitoring app periodically to confirm the battery isn't being drained further than it should during long outages. Flooded lead-acid batteries additionally need their water level checked and topped up with distilled water; lithium and sealed batteries don't, but still benefit from an annual health check that reads actual cell balance rather than just the headline charge percentage.

Inverters: the component most likely to fail quietly

Inverters are electronic and, like any electronics, can develop faults gradually rather than all at once — a cooling fan wearing out, a capacitor degrading, firmware falling out of date. Most modern inverters have a monitoring app that logs daily production; a sudden or gradual unexplained drop is usually the first sign something needs attention, well before the system fails outright.

A simple maintenance schedule

  • Monthly: glance at the monitoring app for unusual drops in output
  • Every 3-6 months: clean panels, check for shading debris
  • Annually: full inspection — mounting, wiring, earthing, battery health check, inverter firmware update
  • Before the rainy season: check roof penetrations and cable glands for water ingress risk
