The battery bank is usually the single most expensive component in a solar-plus-storage system, and it's also where the cheapest quotes usually cut corners. Three battery chemistries are common in the Kenyan market, and they behave very differently once installed.
Flooded lead-acid: the lowest upfront cost, and the highest hidden cost
Flooded lead-acid batteries are the cheapest to buy, which makes them common in budget quotes. They need regular topping up with distilled water, careful ventilation because they vent gas during charging, and they lose usable capacity fast if they're ever deeply discharged. In practice, most flooded batteries in Kenyan installations need replacing within two to four years if they're cycled daily, which erases the upfront saving many times over.
Gel and AGM (sealed lead-acid): less maintenance, still limited lifespan
Gel and AGM batteries are sealed, so there's no topping up and less risk of acid spills or gas buildup indoors. They tolerate Kenyan heat better than flooded batteries and are a reasonable middle-ground choice, but they still shouldn't be discharged much below 50% regularly without shortening their life, and their overall cycle life remains well below lithium.
Lithium-ion (LiFePO4): higher upfront cost, lowest cost per cycle
Lithium iron phosphate batteries cost more per kWh to buy, but they can be discharged much deeper, cycled daily for years longer, need no watering or ventilation work, and include a battery management system that protects them from the mistakes that kill lead-acid batteries early. Over a typical ten-year ownership period, lithium works out cheaper per usable kWh delivered for almost any daily-cycling system, which is why it's now our default recommendation for hybrid solar installations.
What actually matters when comparing quotes
- Usable capacity, not total capacity — a 5kWh lithium battery and a 5kWh lead-acid battery do not deliver the same usable power
- Cycle life at the depth of discharge you'll actually use, not the manufacturer's best-case figure
- Warranty terms in years and cycles, not just a headline number
- Ventilation and space requirements, especially for flooded batteries indoors
- Whether the inverter and battery management system are matched and from compatible brands
A battery bank that's 30% cheaper but needs replacing twice as often isn't a saving — it's a second invoice waiting to happen.
