The three terms get thrown around loosely, but they describe genuinely different systems with different costs, different components, and different jobs to do. Here's the distinction that actually matters, without the sales pitch.
Grid-tied solar: cheapest, and it needs the grid to work
A grid-tied system is panels and an inverter, connected directly to your existing Kenya Power supply. There's no battery. During daylight, solar power feeds your loads directly and reduces what you draw from the grid; at night, you're back on Kenya Power as normal. It's the lowest-cost way into solar per watt installed, but it has one important limitation: if Kenya Power goes down, most grid-tied inverters shut off too, for safety reasons, so you get no backup power during an outage even though the sun is still shining.
Best for: properties in areas with reliable grid supply, where the goal is purely to lower the monthly bill.
Hybrid solar: the system most Kenyan homes and businesses actually choose
A hybrid system adds a battery bank and a smarter inverter that can switch between grid, solar and battery power automatically. You get the bill reduction of a grid-tied system, plus backup for the circuits you choose to protect — usually lighting, networking, fridges, security systems and a few sockets — through an outage. This is the system we install most often, because load-shedding in Kenya makes the backup capability worth the extra cost for most households and almost all commercial clients.
Best for: homes, shops and offices that experience regular outages and want both lower bills and continuity of power.
Off-grid solar: for sites with no Kenya Power connection at all
Off-grid systems are a complete, standalone power supply: panels, a large enough battery bank, and an inverter sized to carry your entire load, day and night, with no grid to fall back on. These are more expensive because every watt you'll ever need has to come from the sun and the battery bank — there's no cheaper daytime grid top-up to lean on. We size these carefully around a full 24-hour load profile, not just daytime usage, because getting it wrong means running out of power at 11pm with nowhere else to draw from.
Best for: rural properties, farms, and sites where extending a Kenya Power connection is impractical or prohibitively expensive.
