How to View CCTV on Your Phone Securely

By Ultrateq Systems · Updated

Short answer

Most modern recorders connect to the internet and let you watch live and recorded video through a phone app. To keep it secure, change all default passwords, use a strong unique password, update firmware, avoid exposing the recorder directly to the internet with open ports, and use the manufacturer's secure cloud or a VPN.

What you need

  • A recorder or camera with network and app support.
  • A stable internet connection at the site.
  • The manufacturer's app on your phone.
  • Enough upload speed for the number of cameras you want to view, usually via the lower-resolution sub-stream.

Security steps

  1. Change the default admin password immediately to a long, unique one.
  2. Create separate user accounts for others, with limited rights.
  3. Update recorder and camera firmware regularly.
  4. Use the vendor's cloud or P2P service rather than opening router ports, or use a VPN for stronger protection.
  5. Turn off services you do not use, such as UPnP.
  6. Put cameras on a separate network from office computers where possible.

Troubleshooting remote access

  • Check the site internet is up and the recorder is online.
  • Confirm the app account and device ID.
  • Lower the video quality if the connection is slow.

Common questions

Does remote viewing use a lot of data?

Live video uses data continuously. Use sub-streams and view only when needed.

Can someone else watch my cameras?

Only if they have your login or the system is poorly secured. Use strong passwords and keep firmware updated.

Do I need a static IP?

Not with modern cloud or P2P apps.
