When Kenya Power goes down, there are really only two serious options for keeping a home or business running: a standby generator, or a solar system with battery backup. They're often compared as if one is simply "better," but in practice they solve the problem differently, and the right answer depends on your outage pattern, budget and tolerance for noise and fuel logistics.
Run time: fuel vs sunlight
A generator's run time is limited only by fuel supply — as long as you can keep it fed, it keeps running, which makes it well suited to extended outages of many hours or days. A solar-battery system's run time depends on battery capacity and, for longer outages, on whether the sun is out to recharge it; it excels at outages measured in hours, particularly ones that happen during daylight when the panels are actively recharging the battery at the same time it's discharging.
Running cost
Generators cost relatively little upfront but consume fuel every hour they run, and fuel costs add up quickly with frequent or lengthy outages. A solar-battery system costs considerably more upfront but has effectively zero running cost afterward — the "fuel" is free sunlight. Over a few years of regular use, the total cost of ownership often favours solar, even though the sticker price doesn't.
Noise and maintenance
Generators are audible, need regular servicing (oil changes, filter replacements), and require a securely stored fuel supply on site — a genuine consideration for urban properties. A solar-battery system is silent and largely passive, needing only the periodic panel cleaning and battery health checks covered elsewhere on this blog.
Automatic changeover
Both systems can be configured to switch on automatically the moment Kenya Power drops, without anyone touching a switch. For a generator, this means an automatic transfer switch and enough fuel kept in reserve at all times; for a hybrid solar system, it's built into the inverter's normal operation.
The case for using both
For sites with frequent, unpredictable, or extended outages, the two aren't mutually exclusive. A hybrid solar-battery system handles the majority of shorter outages silently and at no running cost, while a generator sits in reserve for the rare extended outage that would otherwise drain even a well-sized battery bank. This combination gives the resilience of a generator with the day-to-day economy of solar, without oversizing either system to cover every scenario alone.
