CCTV & Security
CCTV for Shops and Retail Stores: Camera Placement and Setup
Short answer
In a shop, cover the entrance with a face-height camera, each till or counter, the main aisles, the stockroom and the back door, and add outdoor cameras for the front and parking. Record on a recorder with enough storage, protect it with a UPS, and set up phone viewing so you can check the shop from anywhere.
Where to place cameras
- Entrance and exit: one camera at face height, one wider overview.
- Tills and counters: view the cashier and the transaction area.
- Aisles and shelves: overhead domes covering walkways.
- Stockroom and back door: deliveries and staff access.
- Outside: front of the shop, parking and loading areas.
Setup tips
- Avoid pointing at windows or bright lights; use cameras with wide dynamic range.
- Mount where staff and customers cannot easily reach or tilt them.
- Use enough storage for the days you want to keep. See storage guide.
- Keep the recorder in a locked, ventilated place on a UPS.
- Set up alerts and phone viewing with strong passwords.
Notices and privacy

Common questions
How many cameras does a small shop need?
Four is a common starting point: entrance, till, shop floor and back door. A survey confirms it.
Can I see my shop from home?
Yes. A recorder with remote access shows live and recorded video on your phone.
Should cameras record audio?
Audio can raise legal and privacy issues. Get advice before recording sound.
