Electrical
Single-Phase vs Three-Phase Power in Kenya: Which Do You Need?
Short answer
In Kenya, single-phase supply is nominally 240 V and three-phase is 415 V between phases. Most homes use single-phase. You need three-phase for large motors, workshops, big borehole pumps, lifts and heavy air conditioning or solar systems above domestic limits. Upgrading needs approval from Kenya Power and a suitable distribution board and wiring.
The basics
Single-phase uses one live wire and a neutral, giving about 240 V. Three-phase uses three live wires, giving 415 V between phases and 240 V from each phase to neutral. Three-phase delivers more power through thinner cable and runs large motors smoothly.
Single-phase vs three-phase
| Single-phase | Three-phase | |
|---|---|---|
| Nominal voltage | 240 V | 415 V (240 V per phase to neutral) |
| Typical use | Homes, small shops, offices | Factories, workshops, large buildings, big pumps |
| Motors | Small motors | Large motors, smoother and more efficient |
| Capacity | Limited by the supply | Much higher |
| Installation cost | Lower | Higher |
When you need three-phase
- Equipment rated for three-phase, such as large pumps, compressors and machines.
- Total demand above what a single-phase supply provides.
- Workshops, carpentries, welding shops and factories.
- Larger solar systems, since net-metering domestic limits are higher for three-phase connections.
How to upgrade to three-phase
- Confirm that three-phase is available at your location with Kenya Power.
- Have an electrician design the new distribution board and balance loads across phases.
- Apply to Kenya Power and pay the connection charges.
- Install the new board, wiring and protection, and have the meter changed.
- Test and commission.
Why load balancing matters
In a three-phase home or business, connected loads should be spread across the three phases. An unbalanced load overloads one phase and wastes capacity. Good electrical design handles this from the start.
Common questions
Can I run three-phase equipment on single-phase?
Not directly. You may use a variable frequency drive or phase converter for some small motors, but for most equipment the right answer is a three-phase supply.
Is three-phase cheaper to run?
Not by tariff, but it runs large motors more efficiently and lets you draw more power without overloading one line.
Does solar work with three-phase?
Yes. Three-phase inverters suit larger systems, and net-metering limits are reported to be higher for three-phase connections.
