How to Clean and Maintain Solar Panels in Kenya
Short answer
Clean solar panels with plain water and a soft brush or sponge, early in the morning or late in the afternoon when they are cool. How often depends on dust: monthly in dry, dusty areas and after heavy dust or bird droppings, less often where rain washes them. Never use pressure washers, harsh chemicals or hard brushes, and never climb onto a roof unsafely.
Why cleaning matters
Dust, bird droppings and leaves block sunlight and reduce output. Heavy soiling can cut production noticeably, and a single shaded or dirty panel can drag down a whole string of panels.
How to clean panels safely
- Choose a cool time, early morning or late afternoon. Cold water on hot glass can stress it.
- Use clean water and a soft brush, sponge or squeegee on a pole so you can work from the ground or a safe access point.
- Avoid abrasive pads, harsh detergents and pressure washers.
- Rinse off loosened dirt and let the panels dry.
- Do not walk on panels and do not work on a wet or steep roof without proper fall protection.
Routine checks
- Look for cracked glass, loose frames or discoloured cells.
- Check that no new shade has appeared from trees or buildings.
- Check the inverter display or app for errors and falling daily output.
- Check battery terminals, cable ties, isolators and earthing are secure (a technician should do electrical checks).
- Keep batteries ventilated and avoid heat, especially lead-acid types.
When to call a technician
Call a licensed technician if output drops without an obvious cause, an inverter shows repeated faults, cables look damaged or you smell burning. A yearly inspection is good practice. See our solar service.
Common questions
Does rain clean solar panels?
Rain washes off loose dust, but it can leave streaks and does not remove bird droppings or sticky dirt, so occasional manual cleaning still helps.
Can I clean panels myself?
You can if access is safe and you use only water and a soft tool. If the roof is steep, high or fragile, hire someone equipped for it.
Do solar systems need much maintenance?
Little compared with generators: periodic cleaning, visual checks and a yearly professional inspection, plus battery care.
