How to Choose a Solar Inverter in Kenya: Hybrid, Off-Grid or Grid-Tied

By Ultrateq Systems · Updated

Short answer

Choose the inverter type first: grid-tied (no battery), hybrid (grid, solar and battery) or off-grid. Then size it to your continuous load plus the start-up surge of motors, check that its solar input (MPPT) and battery voltage match your design, and choose pure sine wave output, built-in protections and a warranty with local support.

Pick the type

TypeBatteryWorks in power cutBest for
Grid-tied (string)NoNo (shuts down for safety)Cutting daytime bills where the grid is reliable
HybridYesYesHomes and businesses wanting savings and backup
Off-gridYesYes (no grid)Sites without a grid connection

What to check on the datasheet

  • Continuous power (kW): must exceed the loads that run together.
  • Surge power: fridges, pumps and compressors briefly draw several times their running power.
  • Solar input (MPPT): maximum PV voltage, current and power must suit your panel strings.
  • Battery voltage and chemistry: 12, 24, 48 V or high-voltage, and compatibility with lithium or lead-acid.
  • Pure sine wave: protects sensitive electronics and motors.
  • Efficiency and standby use: higher efficiency wastes less energy.
  • Protections: overload, short circuit, over/under voltage, temperature and surge.
  • Monitoring: an app or portal shows production and faults.
  • Warranty and support: who repairs or replaces it in Kenya, and how fast.

Size it properly

Add up what you will run at the same time, include the largest motor start-up, and allow headroom. Our sizing guide walks through an example, and the solar calculator gives a quick estimate.

Common mistakes

  • Buying on price alone from an unknown brand with no local service.
  • Choosing an inverter too small for motor loads.
  • Mismatching battery voltage or chemistry.
  • Skipping surge protection and proper earthing.

Common questions

Can I run a fridge on any inverter?

Only if the inverter can handle the fridge start-up surge and delivers pure sine wave power. Check surge rating, not only continuous kW.

What is MPPT?

Maximum power point tracking. It adjusts the electrical operating point so the panels deliver as much power as conditions allow.

Should I buy an inverter bigger than I need?

Some headroom is good, but oversizing wastes money. Size from your actual loads and plan for modest growth.
